Instead of reaching for that

piece of apple pie after dinner or that late night bowl of chips,

try a warm, comforting cup of peppermint or apple tea instead. According

to Alan Hirsch, M.D., simply inhaling these aromas can actually

help you lose weight! In his research, Dr. Hirsch found that strongly

sweet scents such as chocolate often trigger feelings of hunger

and lead to overeating, while “neutral” sweet smells actually

curb appetite. To test these findings, he asked 3,193 overweight

people (mostly women) aged 18 to 64 to inhale a variety of “neutral”

sweet smells, including banana, green apple, and peppermint, three

times in each nostril whenever they were hungry. After six months,

he found that, on average, the participants lost five pounds a month.
