Perimenopause Natural Progesterone Replacement Therapy Some women may find that for best results they also need to use natural progesterone replacement therapy along with diet and the nutritional supplements that promote ovulation and progesterone production. Natural progesterone, as opposed to synthetic progestins, helps prevent breast cysts and breast cancer, regulates thyroid activity and is essential for the production of cortisone in the adrenal cortex, as well as all the other benefits I’ve already mentioned. It plays an important role in the prevention and reversal of osteoporosis. I’ve also found it to be effective for my patients who are experiencing anxiety and mood swings. Many of my patients prefer natural progesterone as a cream or spray, rather than pills or messy vaginal suppositories. One good product, ProgestEase, can be sprayed on the skin. It is then absorbed into the bloodstream without going through the liver, as oral progesterone must. This product eliminates any guess work on your part, because it delivers a metered spray. Perimenopausal women should use the progesterone spray from day 7 to day 28 of their menstrual cycle. Menopausal women not taking estrogen may use progesterone for two to three weeks each month. Don’t count on wild yam products to increase progesterone levels in your body. This conversion can only be done in a laboratory.
